Okay, I am irritated with my job. As some of you may know, I work in a hair salon. On a particular Sunday that I worked, the cash register was short about $60. Well, Sunday night, they thought the register was just fine. Monday morning, the opening person counted the cash and it was short that amount. That is crazy! How could someone mis-count that badly? Anyway, that is not the point. The point is, they could not find the reason for a shortage in any of the paperwork from Sunday. So they decided that everyone that worked that day needs to pitch in and pay the drawer so that it is back to the right amount.
Well, I refuse to pay any amount because I think that is ridiculous! I have worked for many a different hair salon in my days and not a single one of them asked their employees to do this!!
If the register was over $60 instead of short, would they split it up and pass it out to everyone that worked that day???? I think not!!!! And anyway, isn’t that illegal somehow? Forcing employees to pay the register and fix the books? No one asked ME to check the paperwork to see if I could find the problem. I don’t think anyone tried to find the problem until a few days later anyway.
Many different things could explain the shortage.
- someone stole the money
- someone who used to work there and still has a key broke in and stole the money overnight because they know where the money is kept
- there was some kind of paperwork mistake that they haven’t found yet
Also, Monday night when they closed, was the register short then? This should be handled a different way.
Come on, team! Tell me what you have to say about this!!!

You have my fully support as I'm sure it is illegal - stand up for your rights girl!
Btw: I've be rather busy lately, celebrating my wifes birthday and even had the in-laws from US visiting. Come over and contribute if you like:-)
Alright, I think you should find a new salon to work at asap. that is sooooo not right, and like you said if the till was over $60, they wouldn't split it between you all. Crazy. Sounds like they need a better system for keeping track of the sh*t around there, ya know? FInd a new salon, that's my advice Missy.
If there was one person who was responsible for the register I could see them taking it from their pay to make up the difference but since they didn't even find out about the problem until days later it doesn't sound fair. I wouldn't put in any money either if I were you. And I would definitely start looking for a new place to work.
There is just no way you should have to pay that at all. I'm sure that has to be illegal. I've worked in retail for 21 years and that is right up there with one of the nuttiest things I've heard.
Don't pay!!!!
