Our stupid (poor) cat in on insulin, and his glucose levels keep not going back down and he is peeing rivers and drinking lakes! I had to call to get the last results of his glucose test, and his levels are still about the same, and all they said to do is to increase his dosage from 5 units twice a day to 6 units twice a day and then come pay us another $40 bucks so we can test him again! Ugh! This cat is too expensive! Constantly buying new needles to poke him with, insulin, doctor visits, prescription cat food! All of it! Husband is threatening to have the cat put to sleep! He isn't as much a family member (the cat, not the husband) as other cats have been in the past. He's more just a cat to us. But still, poor cat!
No cat will ever measure up to my BoBo Kitty that I had throughout most of my adult life! I got her as a kitten just before my mom died, had her through many looser boyfriends, lost her once for about a week and was so depressed, and then she came back, or the looser neighbor downstairs finally let her out of his appartment to torture me or something, had her when I met my husband and got married, had her when I had my first baby! Wow, I had her for a super long time and it really broke my heart when she had to die. She understood what I told her, she had compassion, it seemed. I knew what her meows were saying, if it was I'm hungry, or go to bed, or whatever. I miss that cat!
But this cat, he is a little bit crazy. He licked my husband's toes one night while husband was sleeping, and he instinctively smacked his feet together, thinking it was a bug or something, and hit the poor cat in the head. We think he might have had some minor brain damage, or he was just a little crazy to begin with.
This cat, he is afraid of the outdoors. Perhaps because we found him when he was a tiny little kitten stuck in the drainage spout and he had to be pulled out. That could be his fear of the outdoors. Funny for a cat to have that phobia. What's it called? Anyway. He also never wanted to get up on the couch for a long time, eventhough we never discouraged it. Weird.
He is about 8 years old now. I guess we've had him for a long time. He can't eat store bought foods because it gives him gas and the runs in a bad way.

The things we do for our pets. I'm sorry to hear about the cat. In a way I almost agree with your husband. It's not so much about the money though but about the cat's quality of life. I can't stand to see any animal suffer. I have a friend who has an 18 year old cat that is sooooo sickly but she just will not put it to sleep. The poor thing is just miserable sometimes. It's so sad to watch. The cat will let you know when it is time though. You can definately see it in their eyes. They just seem to loose their spirit to live.
Oops...sorry, I forgot to add to my last post, I hope kitty is doing ok and I will keep her, and you, in my thoughts.
Poor kitty! shame on your husband for wanting to put him down for not being closer to the family and a waste of his money! If the kitty needs to be put down that's a different story.
I just love kitties and I hate to see them suffer! I'm an animal lover in general and I would have a bunch more if I didn't live in an apartment!
Yeah, I mean, the cat just pees a lot and drinks a lot. Other than that, I think he feels okay. I don't know though. I think he is scared of the dark also, not just the outdoors. And he is afraid to be alone I think. When we all go to bed at night, he meows in the dark. I try to leave the drapes open enough for the backyard light to come in, so he has some light. Crazy cat, afraid of the dark!
I know diabetes in humans can cause blindness, maybe that's part of the problem and he just hasn't adjusted to it. Where does he usually sleep at night? Maybe you can put a night light in an outlet nearby.
He used to sleep on my feet in the bed, but for some reason he doesn't do that anymore. Maybe because i give him shots now, he is punishing me that way. So I think he sleeps in the living room area - he has a spot by the back door, or on a chair in the dining room.
You know, people just don't get it that pets are sometimes better to you than family and friends...we had 2 cats for a number of years...one died of old age about a year ago and the other wound up wiht a big tumor in his belly, which we had removed ($$$$)...special food, etc...then it grew back in about 4 months...Then we knew it was not really going to get better, so we just kept him comfortable and eventually he was gone...No pain that we could tell...always sweet. It's heartbreaking.
Hope things perk up for your little cutie pie...
